I truly believe, with every fiber of my being, that without access to safe abortion care I would have lost my mind. I am so thankful for my abortion and the unthinkable opportunities it has given me.

In 2015, when I had my last pregnancy, I was already a single parent of four awesome children. I got custody of two of my sisters children in 2012 and a third child born in 2013. My own son was added to the group in April of 2015. In December, when I realized I was pregnant, I had a full plate, and my son was only 8 months old. My biggest concern was making sure my kids had a great Christmas.

I knew I couldn’t mentally or financially handle a 5th child. I contacted Preterm and set up my initial appointment. They were beyond helpful and supportive. They even helped me finance the procedure since the Hyde amendment prohibits use of government insurance for abortion care.

At the time I would have never thought that I would be asked to be part of a fellowship that would give me so much priceless information and empowerment. I have learned to advocate for myself, my children and my community. I have gained knowledge and confidence to know what’s going on in my country, to stand for what I believe in, and to speak out against the things I don’t.

Opportunity can present itself to you so unexpectedly. So many people look at abortion in a negative way. For me, it has taken me places I never even thought of going and given me experiences I will carry for the rest of my life.
